A German friend who had some of her own works displayed at a Berlin art gallery in 2003 sparked my interest in paper collages. I felt drawn to the art form because I like working with strong colors and I am also a firm believer in recycling. For my collages I use durable, glossy paper such as from National Geographic magazines. I sort paper clippings by color, cut out shapes, and then start playing with arrangements. Sometimes a theme will emerge; other times the picture remains abstract. I prefer starting with just shapes and colors, moving the paper around until I have a pleasing composition. Titles come much later, and they tend to change over time as I keep looking at the piece.
